Third Piece (Recording)

My final project example I'll be documenting will be a recording session of our school band. Throughout this section our band will be covering 3 pieces although I will only be showing the very first piece. Recording the band was very limited as most of my resources were very old. So I decided to take my Yamaha mixer and use 4 of the schools microphones to record. All sound effects afterwards were added on FL Studio 12. After trial and error I've concluded that recording a large band of about 20 people requires much more than 4 microphones but unfortunately due to my mixers max limitation of 4 microphones and the hassle it would be to set up any more I had to make due. This is the first recording session of my project. After adding reverb and delay I noticed the intense volumes of sound coming from the percussion and saxophone so I've added an equalizer to attempt to lower these sounds. Unfortunately it seems that doing this results in a general lowered "quality...

Second Piece

Image
This second piece is from an OST from Orange, the original piece can be found here. I'll be using a midi to build a base for this piece, one that I have found linked in this video. unfortunately the MIDI file included has some odd notation, everything is very short and played in a staccato style, this may have been due to the MIDI being created live from a keyboard without editing. So my first objective was to extend all the notes and fix any errors, which took approximately an hour. After was finding what note had the melody, and bass line so I could extend these notes for other instruments such as a cello and flute. In the end I ended up taking the bass line  and moving it several octaves down while adding and fine tuning to my own personal preferences. After everything was finished with notation and instrumentation, I added sound effects such as reverb and delay to create a more realistic sound. This in total took two days (9 hours aprox.) Here i...

How I record

Image
For live recording, (for instruments/voices) I have several different types of instruments used for recording. Microphone : Standard dynamic microphone used for karaoke, very useful for recording high notes and voices but quality is significantly a lot lower than other microphones just because it was made to be purchase in bundles for singing. The microphone is placed onto a stand facing downwards towards me. Mixer: I'm using the MG10XU from Yamaha, a great mixer overall but unfortunately the usb output on the device lowers the overall sound coming to my computer which forces me to record at higher volumes, the downside of doing this is that when playing instruments, if the sound is too loud the mixer will peak causing the recording to have a very weird spike sound. Computer Specs: AMD 8350 FX processor 8 Gigs of DDR3 RAM

Q&A

What is my project Q:What is my driving question I'm learning? A: How to work with midi files in creating music, using VST's, and understanding the software Fruity Loops Who will I work with? A: No one, although I'll be using Midi files composed from other sources Audience? A: Anyone who listens to the soundcloud posts Why would this be worthwhile? A: It allows me to further branch off into my hobbies, playing real instruments is fun, but digital music is also growing and is something I'd like to work on. What do I expect to learn? A: Dynamics within composing digital music, digital audio effects, composing techniques and real and digital music. What product will u have to show at the end year? A:All of my finished projects will be displayed what sort of expenses will be involved? A:None What equipment will I need? A:For Presenting: Speakers/Headsets, Computer (along with mouse and other essentials) For working at home: Headset, Computer...

First Piece

Image
Considering that I'll be making music out of midi to begin with and maybe experiment with other methods I want to find a piece that is relatively easy. I'll be starting off with recording and learning how to edit sound files of my recordings to further improve the overall quality of the music. The Music The piece will be a remake of Pachelbel's Cannon in D, using all digital instruments and a variety of sound effects from Fruity Loops. Although the key I'll be working on is different the overall sound will be similar. VST While it's fun and all to use digital instruments we need to understand how to work them. Digital instruments, otherwise VST's are exactly what they sound like, digital audio placed upon a keyboard playing at different pitches with various other effects in place. That is the bare bone idea of a digital instrument. I've used NEXUS pre-sets for most (The interface for the Nexus VST) Using a guitar, and piano pre-set as ...

Introduction

Introducing applications Alex Vo Welcome to the very first post on development of my first score for digital and recording music! Over the course of months I will be exploring and documenting progress I've made. The music will all be written from scratch, recorded by myself, and digitally made on the following applications. My goal is to learn how to use midi's to create real and digital music, I'll be learning how to add effects and edit audio and digital sounds. Almost all of my work will be done solo, although most resources and music I use for recordings have been arranged and composed by someone else. I'll leave the names and site on my posts. Fruity Loops Studio (Composing and digital audio editor) Musescore Portable(Composing software for at school) Soundcloud (Uploading) KWL What do I know? • General use and purpose of Musescore and FL studio • Bare minimum music theory • Full use of Soundcloud • How to play the flute • Recording hardwa...
